Feature Stories

This story was one of the more challenging yet impactful pieces I’ve written. Through months of interviews, research, and firsthand experiences with Evelyn Rushing, I came to understand how vital the Pinewoods Library was to the Athens community. Writing this piece was one of the most rewarding experiences of my journalism journey, and I’m proud to say it was published.

I learned to be persistent in gathering information, paying attention to even the smallest details, and crafting questions that elicit emotional, meaningful responses. I also grew in my ability to navigate sensitive topics with care and responsibility. This experience taught me how to conduct respectful interviews, engage in meaningful conversations, and transform hours of interviews into a compelling narrative.

Immersing myself in the library's environment helped me become more attentive to my surroundings, capturing the essence of a place without disrupting its daily routine.

Ultimately, this project deepened my desire to pursue journalism that highlights individuals driving positive change in their communities. As I continue to grow in my career, I look forward to expanding this part of my portfolio, focusing on those making a difference in their local communities and telling their stories.
